Prof. Dr. Slavko Simeunović is a specialist in pediatrics and cardiology, doctor of medical sciences, and full professor at the School of Medicine in Belgrade. He has served as the head of the cardiology department at the University Children’s Hospital in Belgrade for many years. He has pursued further professional development in Boston (Harvard Medical School, Children’s Hospital Medical Center Boston), Houston (Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children’s Hospital), as well as in London and Berlin.
In 1979, he performed the first balloon Rashkind septostomy for transposition of the great arteries, which preoperatively saves the lives of newborns. He was among the first to apply balloon valvuloplasty of the pulmonary artery, just three years after its initial implementation worldwide.
